Atlantis Crown To Make History
The Atlantis Crown Invitational has grown tremendously over the last six years, but this year, the event will make history in The Bahamas. For the first time ever, Bahamian athletes will participate in the trampoline and tumbling events at the coveted tournament.
The meet is set for December 14-17 and will bring over 1,000 male and female gymnasts from five countries, including The Bahamas, United States, Canada, Surinam and for the first time, the United Kingdom.
The Bahamas is being represented by 82 gymnasts from three clubs.
Coordinator of the event Cindy Scharns says many gymnasts look forward to the annual competition.
“We are excited to be returning to what we consider our second home to host the sixth annual Atlantis Crown. The event continues to grow and this year will boast 1,096 athletes representing 59 gymnastics clubs and five countries. In addition, we will feature over 82 Bahamian athletes competing from Level 1 through Level 9 and male and female,” she said.
“This year’s event will be history in the making for The Bahamas. For the first time, Bahamian athletes will compete in the Trampoline and Tumbling portion of the Atlantis Crown. The athletes will compete Saturday afternoon 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the tumbling division. We encourage you to join us for this monumental event.”
The Ministry of Tourism has proudly sponsored the Atlantis Crown Invitation since its inception – something Director of Sports Tourism Virginia Kelly says is not going to end anytime soon.
“The Invitational has become a much anticipated event on our Sports Tourism Calendar. In addition to the significant economic impact, we have seen its impact on our local athletes. The future for gymnastics in the country can only continue to grow, as the participants in this event are largely junior athletes. This also means that the number of family and friends that travel to The Bahamas will also grow as traditionally at least two visitors accompany each athlete. More great news is that many of the spectators visit some of our other islands during their stay,” she said.
The opening ceremony for the Atlantis Crown Invitational will take place on Thursday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Competition on Friday and Saturday will occur from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. and on Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
