MS Independence of the Seas Inaugural Visit to Grand Bahama Island

Tuesday, January 23rd, the Royal Caribbean's MS Independence of the Seas made an unexpected call on Grand Bahama Island at the Freeport Harbour.

With over 4,000 guests aboard, the 340-metre-long vessel, initially scheduled to make its way to Miami, Florida, diverted to Grand Bahama Island at the request of the Christian based contemporary radio station "K Love".

The “K Love” group, who charted the Royal Caribbean vessel, celebrated their 15th year at sea where all guests had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful islands of the Caribbean while getting up close and personal with their favorite Christian artists.

Nuvolari Chotoosingh, Manager Niche Markets, MOTA said, "Certainly, anytime we have an unscheduled call to Grand Bahama, it's always an opportunity for a boost in the economy, which we certainly need at this particular time".

With regard to Grand Bahama Island’s growing reputation for catering to faith-based groups, Captain Orlando Forbes, Port Director, Freeport Harbour Company said that "As we continue to see this segment of the market continuing to grow...we extend our arms and we welcome them to Freeport."

Teo Strazicic, Captain, MS Independence of the Seas, said, "I've been here with the MS Grandeur of the Seas but since I'm on the Independence, this is our first call here.I'm just happy to be here and to see the progress over the years that the harbour and the people have made".

As a result of the visit, members of the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation in conjunction with officials from the Freeport Harbour Company hosted a traditional plaque exchange to commemorate the occasion.
