World’s Most Exclusive Tennis Pro-Am Tournament Comes to The Bahamas

In the summer of 2017, Necker Island, an island in the British Virgin Islands owned by humanitarian, Sir. Richard Branson, was one of the many Caribbean islands destroyed by Hurricane Irma. Because of the devastation, the Necker Cup Pro-Am Tennis Tournament, held Nov. 27 – Dec. 2, was forced to temporarily relocate to newly opened Baha Mar Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.

The 2017 Necker Cup is a six-day, all exclusive tennis event. The title sponsor of this year’s tournament is Manuka Doctor and the presenting sponsor is Metal. The Manuka Doctor Necker Cup features top ATP / WTA Tour players, legends and Sir. Branson himself, who are paired up with amateur teams of all levels, for fun, spirited competition. The event takes place at the Peter Burwash International Racquet Club at Baha Mar.

Taking place simultaneously is the 2017 Manuka Doctor Necker Open, which is a Pro-Am golf event featuring top PGA Pros and Legends. This event unfolds at the signature Jack Nicklaus golf course at the Royal Blue Golf Club at Baha Mar.

Celebrities such as Bahamian Mark Knowles, Greg Dimitrov, Greg Norman, Jake Owens and Nicole Gibbs and many more are in The Bahamas for this exciting event.

Virginia Kelly, Director of Sports Tourism Marketing, said The Bahamas is happy to lend a helping hand where it can.

“Sir. Richard Branson brought his annual event into Nassau because of what happened to his island. This is certainly a great opportunity for The Bahamas that was presented to us under unfortunate circumstances. Nevertheless, we are certainly glad to pitch in and assist in any way that we could. This here is yet again another demonstration of our ability to host events and quickly turn things around in The Bahamas,” Kelly said.

Fundraising for charity is a major focus of the Necker Cup. Every year, a live auction takes places putting on offer unique opportunities, such as travel packages, memorabilia and top tennis experiences. In past years, this auction has raised over $3 million for designated charities. This year, however, after making its annual contribution to the BVI National Tennis Foundation, the majority of money raised will go towards the Virgin Unite BVI Community Support Appeal in the rebuilding of the communities in the British Virgin Islands.

Baha Mar is also supporting local relief efforts in The Bahamas with an auction donation of four nights for seven couples at SLS Baha Mar, including a private jet transfer from within a three-hour radius from Nassau for 14 guests.

The Necker Cup, relocated this year to its temporary home at Baha Mar in The Bahamas, has lived up to its reputation as the world’s most dynamic event in pro-am tennis.
