Overseas Research Students Award Scheme

ORSAS was set up by the Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1979 to attract high-quality international students to the United Kingdom to undertake research. The Scheme is administered by Universities UK on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and is funded through the four UK higher education funding bodies (for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). The awards offer international students the opportunity to carry out a broad range of research at well-established UK academic institutions of worldwide recognition.

Our awardholders make a valuable contribution, not only to the British research base, but also to economic, scientific, educational and other aspects of life in their own country. Bahamas Hotel Association (BHA) Scholarship Programme

One of the avenues to foster the development of the talent which our industry needs is through the Bahamas Hotel Association or the Caribbean Hotel Foundation (CHF) scholarship programs. Three activities are held annually which support these important programs BHA's annual golf tournament in October, the BHA Holiday Auction in December, and the CHF Live and Silent Auction held each year at CHA CHIC in June. Three Bahamians are presently receiving scholarships and dozens have been recipients over the years. The programs support academic scholarships as well as programs leading to certification and professional development.

A number of hotels have had existing employees as recipients of professional development scholarships while others have hired student scholarship recipients who have graduated from some of the world's finest tourism and hospitality programs. There are several great things about these programs - they are industry supported and managed; the selection criteria meets the highest expectations from industry; student progress is carefully monitored; BHA is provided ongoing feedback on student progress and must approve continuation of a student's scholarship; and funds for CHF are leveraged from both national, regional and international industry partner support.

Invitations for applications are available annually in January and applications are accepted through to the end of March. For additional information visit the CHA website at www.caribbeanhotelfoundation.org or contact the Bahamas Hotel Association at (242)322-8381
